CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The West Liberty University women's wrestling team closed out competition at the NWCA National Duals on Saturday with a hard-fought victory in the third-place match of the NCAA 13–16 bracket, securing a 15th-place finish overall inside the UNI-Dome.
Fort Hays State 38, West Liberty 7
West Liberty opened Day Two against Fort Hays State in the semifinal round and ran into a deep Tiger lineup. Fort Hays State used bonus-point victories across the lineup to pull away for a 38-7 decision.
The Hilltoppers' lone win came at 131 pounds, where Cassia Zammit delivered an impressive performance, earning a first-period fall at the 1:56 mark against Addison Broxterman. Several other bouts were closely contested, including a narrow 2-1 decision at 207 pounds, but Fort Hays State's depth proved decisive.
West Liberty 25, Sioux Falls 22
West Liberty responded with a strong showing in the bracket final, edging Sioux Falls 25-22 to claim third place in the 13–16 bracket and 15th place overall.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early advantage with forfeits at 103 and 110 pounds before Trinity Howard extended the lead with a first-period pin at 117 pounds, stopping Abigail Wilfong at the 1:23 mark.
Cassia Zammit continued her outstanding weekend with an 11-1 technical fall at 131 pounds, while Makyah Newlun provided a pivotal swing at 160 pounds, earning a pin at the 2:39 mark.
The tightly contested dual came down to the final weights, with West Liberty holding on to secure the three-point victory and close the tournament on a high note.
