WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's soccer team turned in a strong defensive effort and created several quality scoring chances in their season opener Thursday night, but Seton Hill capitalized on a pair of second-half goals to come away with a 2-0 win at the West Family Complex.
The Hilltoppers (0-1) held their ground in a scoreless first half, outshooting the Griffins 5-3 and generating three corner kicks. West Liberty's back line and goalkeeper stood firm, keeping Seton Hill from finding an early breakthrough.
After halftime, the visitors broke through in the 61st minute when Mason Fabean finished a chance to put the Griffins on top. Seton Hill added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute, with James Aubrey finding the net off an assist from Rowan Aisenbrey.
West Liberty kept the pressure on until the final whistle, finishing with seven total shots – including two on frame – while goalkeeper Shai'ya Henry made five saves to keep the Hilltoppers within reach.
The Hilltoppers will look to bounce back quickly as they welcome Wheeling to the West Family Athletic Complex Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
