WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – A new Hilltopper tradition will kick off this week as the West Liberty University women's soccer team welcomes Wheeling University for the inaugural Ohio Valley Soccer Night on Wednesday under the lights at the West Family Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Hilltoppers (0-3, 0-1 MEC) are looking to get on track after a challenging start to the season, while the rival Cardinals (0-3, 0-1 MEC) arrive with the same record and plenty of motivation. Both sides will be eager to claim their first win of the year in this Mountain East Conference showdown.
West Liberty has leaned heavily on goalkeeper Cianna Butera, who has racked up 37 saves through the opening three matches, ranking among the conference leaders. Offensively, the Hilltoppers will look to midfielders Perla Bäckberg and Frida Lundberg to spark chances as they search for their first goal of the season.
Wheeling, meanwhile, comes in after a 2-0 setback at Point Park despite outshooting the Pioneers 12-8. Maira Alevato led the charge with three shots, while goalkeeper Sam Faulkner kept the Cardinals in it with three saves.
Beyond the rivalry, Wednesday's match will mark the launch of Ohio Valley Soccer Night, hosted by the Hilltoppers. The event invites local youth players, coaches, and teams from across the region to celebrate the game together. Admission is FREE, and fans are encouraged to help set a new program attendance record.
"This is a great opportunity to bring the local soccer community together," head coach Pete McMenemy said. "We want to showcase the talent in our area, create an exciting atmosphere for our players, and give fans a night to remember."
Fans can expect more than just action on the pitch, with Chick-fil-A on site serving up favorites and public recognition for attending youth soccer squads during the match.
