West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University linebacking corps enters the 2025 season with a mix of experience, leadership, and exciting young talent, giving head coach Roger Waialae optimism about the unit's impact on the defense.
At the helm is senior Nolan Shimp, who recorded 45 tackles last season. Waialae expects Shimp to serve as the "quarterback" of the defense, ensuring the unit is in the right front and aligned correctly on every play.
Joining Shimp are key contributors Sawyer VanMatre, who saw action in six games as a freshman, and transfer Seth Poriah from the University of Central Arkansas, both of whom bring athleticism and versatility to the middle of the field.
Waialae is particularly encouraged by the group of incoming freshmen. Mohamed Touray, Coldin Burkhart, Brayden Rauch, Nate Bonds, Zach Hicks, and LaQuinton Thompson Jr. have impressed with their physical readiness, though they still need to acclimate to the mental aspects of the Hilltoppers' defensive system. Redshirt sophomore Chase Crutchley also adds depth and experience to the rotation.
"The talent is there, and now it's about consistency and learning the nuances of our defense," Waialae said. "If these young guys continue to develop, this linebacking corps could be a real strength for us this season."
With a combination of proven leaders and promising newcomers, the Hilltoppers' linebackers are poised to be a cornerstone of the defense as West Liberty looks to make a statement in the 2025 season.
The Hilltoppers open the season Thursday, August 28th at Walsh University. The home opener is Saturday, September 6 at 1 p.m. at West Family Stadium.
