West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University defensive line enters the 2025 season with a blend of proven playmakers and promising young talent, and head coach Roger Waialae is excited about the group's potential.
Leading the charge are the duo known as "The Grants" — sophomore Grant Thompson and junior Grant Neiswonger — alongside redshirt sophomore Bre'Andre Horsley. Waialae said these three must be the anchors of the line this season.
Last year, Thompson recorded 34 total tackles, including 8.5 for loss, and notched three sacks in nine games. Horsley was limited to just three games due to injury but made a strong impact with 4.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks in that short span. "These guys set the tone up front," Waialae said.
Supporting the trio are junior Sajed Abdel-Momin, who saw action in four games last season, and redshirt freshmen Melique Lewis and Corey Smith, who played in three and one games, respectively. Transfer Chase Lawrence has impressed in camp and spring ball, while senior Carson Moore returns from injury and is working to earn his spot back in the rotation.
Freshmen Dominic Maultsby, Peyton Rauch, Gavin Cummins, and Antajuan Harvey have also caught the coaches' attention, bringing size, athleticism, and depth to the unit. Waialae emphasized that developing depth across the defensive line will be critical this season, as the Hilltoppers aim to rotate as many as 12 linemen per game.
"The speed of this group is something I really like," Waialae said. "We have a lot of talent, and if we can stay healthy and continue to develop, this defensive line is going to give us a lot of opportunities to control games."
With a core of experienced players, a mix of transfers and redshirt talent, and a highly touted freshman class, the Hilltoppers' defensive line looks poised to be a force in 2025.
The Hilltoppers open the season Thursday, August 28 at Walsh University. The home opener is Saturday, September 6 at 1 p.m. at West Family Stadium.
