Toppers’ Tyler Skeen Named MEC Freshman of the Year

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty University's Tyler Skeen capped off an impressive debut season by being named the Mountain East Conference (MEC) Freshman of the Year, the league announced Tuesday.

A native of McDonald, Pa., Skeen emerged as the ace of the Hilltoppers' pitching staff, posting a 6-4 record over 12 appearances with a 5.55 ERA. He ranked eighth in the MEC with 53 strikeouts across 58.1 innings pitched and notched a pair of complete games. In addition to his Freshman of the Year honors, Skeen was also selected to the All-MEC Second Team.

Two other Hilltoppers also received conference recognition. Junior first baseman Will Balgo, a St. Clairsville, Ohio native, earned honorable mention after batting .368 with six home runs. Senior outfielder Jacob Sherman, from Newark, Ohio, also received honorable mention honors, leading the team with seven home runs and adding 30 RBIs on the season.
