West Liberty, W.Va. – Three West Liberty University wrestlers are set to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championships this weekend in Indianapolis, with two-time national champion Ty McGeary (184 lbs.) leading the charge. McGeary, one of the most accomplished wrestlers in program history, is making his final appearance on the national stage as he seeks to secure his third consecutive national title. He will be joined by teammates James Armstrong Jr. (133 lbs.) and Khyvon Grace (141 lbs.).
McGeary enters the tournament with a stellar 30-1 record, coming off yet another historic season. He became the first wrestler in Mountain East Conference (MEC) history to win four consecutive conference championships, further cementing his legacy. Ranked as the most dominant wrestler in all Division II weight classes by the NCAA, McGeary is eager to make the most of his final opportunity at the national level.
"I'm super excited to have one more trip to the national tournament," McGeary said. "Things didn't work out as we wanted as a team, but we still have three guys going who can make big things happen. God has blessed me with another opportunity to compete at this level, and I'm excited to see what this weekend entails—especially with all the support I have from my amazing girlfriend and my family, who will be there to watch me compete."
McGeary has been the face of excellence for West Liberty wrestling over the past five years, and he takes great pride in representing the program.
"It's been an honor to represent West Liberty, and being able to do it one more time is special," he said. "Having our whole team there on Friday and Saturday makes it even better. West Liberty has helped shape me into not just the wrestler, but the person I am today. Coach Irwin, Coach Rivera, Coach Scollo, and our entire coaching staff work relentlessly to make us as successful as possible. It really is a team effort here. We have 40 guys who show up day after day, not just wanting to improve themselves, but also pushing their teammates. It's just a fun atmosphere to be around."
West Liberty head coach Danny Irwin praised McGeary's leadership and commitment, both on and off the mat.
"McGeary has been a rock for the program over the years because of his approach to life off the mat," Irwin said. "He lives his life glorifying God and is a multi-time Scholar All-American. Having those two things squared away consistently has really allowed him to make the most of his wrestling! We have a lot of fun with the technical side of it, but even more on the competitive—trying to light the scoreboard up!"
McGeary enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed at 184 lbs. and will face Calan Staub (15-8) from Mount Olive in the opening round.
West Liberty Teammates Ready for Nationals
Freshman standout James Armstrong Jr. (133 lbs.) has put together an impressive debut season with a 27-9 record. He placed third at the MEC Championship and had a thrilling run at regionals, highlighted by a dramatic 9-8 semifinal win over Maximus Shore (Tiffin) and a dominant 17-0 tech fall victory over Anthony Sagaris (Lake Erie) in the championship match. Unseeded in the national tournament, Armstrong Jr. will face No. 6 seed Sam Spencer (24-4) from St. Cloud State in his opening bout.
Khyvon Grace (141 lbs.), a returning All-American, finished seventh at nationals last season and is now a three-time regional placer. Injuries slowed his season, but he still enters the tournament with a 12-6 record. He placed third at the MEC Championship and won the regional title at 141 lbs. in 2024. Also unseeded, Grace will battle No. 3 seed Brayden Lowery (17-7) from UIndy in the first round.
