Timeless Topper: Rich Schoene ‘84

West Liberty, W.Va. – Few wrestlers have left a more lasting mark on West Liberty University athletics than Rich Schoene. A two-time All-American and one of the program's most accomplished competitors, Schoene's legacy extends from his outstanding collegiate career to a lifelong commitment to education and community service.

Sport Played at West Liberty
Schoene was a standout on the wrestling team, earning back-to-back NAIA All-America honors in 1983 and 1984 while competing at 190 pounds. He was a four-year letterman and two-year team captain under legendary coach Vince Monseau.

What He's Doing Now
After retiring in August 2025 from a 15-year tenure as Superintendent of the Belmont-Harrison Vocational School District, Schoene continues to serve his community as Fire Chief in Glen Dale, West Virginia. He also spent time as a board member and president of the Ohio Association of Career Technical Superintendents.

  • Two-time NAIA All-American (6th place in 1983, 3rd place in 1984)
     

  • Finished collegiate career with an 86-31-2 record
     

  • Ranked among the top three all-time in West Liberty history in pins, reversals, and shutouts at the time of his induction
     

  • Served as a two-year captain and four-year letterman for the Hilltoppers
