ADRIAN, Mich. — The West Liberty University women's wrestling team saw standout performances from Bailey Emery and Issabella Kessey on Saturday at the Adrian College Women's Invitational, highlighted by a runner-up finish from Emery and a top-seven placement by Kessey.
Emery impressed in the 131-pound bracket, earning three straight wins to advance to the championship match. She opened the day with back-to-back first-period falls over Mount Union's Annette Oberhauser (2:05) and Lock Haven's Rachel Plata (2:23), then posted a strong 4-0 decision over Olivia Heft of Grand Valley State in the semifinals. Emery finished as runner-up after being pinned in the finals by Mount Union's Gabi Gartin, capping her tournament with a 4-3 record and 19 team points.
Kessey also made a deep run in the 160-pound bracket, placing seventh after a 5-2 performance on the day. She picked up four wins by fall, including a lightning-quick pin in just 26 seconds over Delaware State's Aniyah McIver in the seventh-place bout. Kessey finished the event with a 9-4 season record and contributed 16 points to the team total.
Freshman Makyah Newlun (160A) added a win by fall in just 1:04 over Lock Haven's Raegan Snider to start her day, while Sienna Van Balen (117) earned an 8-4 decision win in the consolation bracket.
Goalkeeper-style grit also came from Sydney Chambers (103) and Savannah Bramhall (160A), who continued to gain valuable mat experience against deep competition in their respective brackets.
The Hilltoppers will return to action Nov.21 when they host Point Park in a dual at the ASRC.
