ADRIAN, Mich. — Coming off a strong season-opening performance at the Tiffin Open, the No. 14-ranked West Liberty University women's wrestling team is back on the mat this weekend for a two-day slate at Adrian College. The Hilltoppers will compete in the Adrian College Women's Duals on Saturday before returning Sunday for the Adrian College Women's Invitational at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
West Liberty impressed in its debut last weekend, placing six wrestlers at the Tiffin Open and showing early-season depth across multiple weight classes. Leading the charge were Cassia Zammit (131 lbs.) and Makyah Newlun (160 lbs.), who each earned runner-up finishes with dominant runs to their respective finals.
Zammit opened her season with four straight bonus-point victories, including three technical falls and two first-period pins, while Newlun rolled through her bracket with a series of decisive wins highlighted by an 11–0 technical fall and a 38-second pin.
The Hilltoppers also showcased balance throughout their lineup, as Chiara Barbieri (103 lbs.) and Mariah Mills (110 lbs.) each placed third, combining for 10 bonus-point wins on the day. Abby DiCenzo (124 lbs.), Isabell Kessey (160 lbs.), and Jamie Shapton (207 lbs.) rounded out the placers, all finishing fifth and adding key team points with consistent scoring in their consolation rounds.
Head coach Troy Bell's squad will look to build on that momentum against a competitive field in Adrian, where several nationally ranked programs are set to compete across both days. Saturday's dual meet format will provide the Hilltoppers an early chance to test their lineup head-to-head before Sunday's individual tournament action.
Competition begins both days at 10 a.m. at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center.
