WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — Fresh off a statement sweep of rival Wheeling University, the West Liberty University volleyball team looks to keep rolling this weekend as it hosts a pair of Mountain East Conference matchups inside the ASRC.
The Hilltoppers welcome Davis & Elkins on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday at 1 p.m.
West Liberty (10-10, 3-2 MEC) turned in one of its most complete performances of the season on Tuesday night, sweeping Wheeling 27-25, 25-18, 27-25 to earn just its third win over the Cardinals in the last 57 meetings. The Hilltoppers hit .260 as a team and tallied 54 kills while holding Wheeling to a .150 percentage.
Senior Ashley Cudnik led the charge with 18 kills and 14 digs, while Dakoda Keni dished out 45 assists to guide a balanced attack. Kyia White (.480 hitting percentage, 14 kills) and Liv McAtee (9 kills, 3 blocks) added key contributions at the net as WLU's defense posted seven total blocks.
Head coach Makenzy Johnson said Tuesday's win reflected her team's growth and resilience.
"We've been emphasizing consistency and execution," Johnson said. "To see it all come together in that match — the energy, the defense, and how well we finished each set — that's what we've been building toward. Now the challenge is to sustain that level through the weekend."
The Hilltoppers will aim to carry that momentum into back-to-back MEC home contests.
Friday – Davis & Elkins (0-16, 0-6 MEC)
The Senators come to town still seeking their first win of the season. Despite the record, D&E has battled competitively in stretches behind scrappy defense and steady serving. The Hilltoppers will look to dictate tempo early and apply pressure from the service line to keep the Senators off balance.
Saturday – West Virginia Wesleyan (12-5, 4-1 MEC)
Saturday's matchup with Wesleyan presents a tougher test. The Bobcats sit near the top of the conference standings, hitting .209 as a team and showcasing one of the league's more balanced offenses. West Liberty's defensive discipline and blocking efficiency will be key in slowing down the Bobcats' attack.
