Makenzy Johnson

Makenzy Johnson enters her second season as head coach of the West Liberty University volleyball program after guiding the Hilltoppers to a solid debut campaign. In 2024, Johnson led the team to a 15-15 overall record, including a 9-5 mark in Mountain East Conference play, finishing second in the MEC North Division and earning a spot in the MEC Tournament.

Johnson initially joined the Hilltopper volleyball staff as a graduate assistant coach for the 2023-24 academic year before being elevated to the head coaching role.

A native of Chesterfield, Virginia, Johnson played collegiate volleyball at Norfolk State University (2018–20), University of Charleston (2020–21), and Virginia State University (2021–22). Over her playing career, she compiled 128 kills, 1,269 assists, 103 service aces, 475 digs, 5 blocks, and 234 total points, showcasing her versatility and leadership on the court.

In addition to her collegiate experience, Johnson brings a strong background in club volleyball coaching, having worked with Coastal Volleyball Club, Vantage Volleyball Club, and Richmond Volleyball Club during her time as a student-athlete.

Johnson holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Virginia State University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Education with a concentration in Sports Leadership and Coaching from West Liberty.

Makenzy is the daughter of Felicia and Derrick Johnson and comes from a strong athletic lineage. Her sister, Kendall Johnson, was a standout volleyball player at Shippensburg University, while her father, Derrick Johnson, played college football at Kent State University. Makenzy currently resides in Wheeling.
