Hilltoppers Fall in Home Opener

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va.  – The West Liberty University women's soccer team hosted Fairmont State at a sun splashed West Family Athletic Complex in front of a large crowd earlier this afternoon. The match remained scoreless through the first twenty five minutes of play before the Fighting Falcons netted back-to-back goals in the 25th and 26th minute. Fairmont State went on to win the match, 5-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Hilltoppers hosted the Fighting falcons in mutual Mountain East Conference opener on a sun-filled day at West Family Athletic Complex in front of a crowd of a 143 fans 

  • The MEC counterparts went toe-to-toe for the first twenty five minutes of action 

  • The Falcons rattles off two shots, one in the 7th minute that went wide  and the other in the 16th minute that was saved by Hilltopper goalkeeper Cianna Butera 

  • The Falcons threatened again a few minutes later and netted two goals in the 25th and 26th minute 

  • The Falcons netted one more goal to close out the first half of play 

  • Freshman defender/midfielder Rylyn Bielinski drove home her first collegiate goal and first goal for the Hilltoppers this season in the 62nd minute of the second half 

  • Veteran senior midfielder  Morgan Kost picked up the well-earned assist on the goal

  • The Hilltoppers attempted 11 shots this afternoon, and 3 on-target. The other two shot-on-goal attempts were delivered in by Hilltopper forwards Kara Keiper and Audrey Lantz 

  • The match remained 3-1 until the Falcons scored two more quick goals in the 81st and 83rd minute. Fairmont won the match, 5-1

The Hilltoppers look to regroup on the road this Wednesday as they travel to Bridgeport, West Virginia for an afternoon matchup against Salem. Kickoff between the Tigers and Hilltoppers is set for 2:30 p.m. at the Bridge Sports Complex.
