Hilltoppers Close Out 2024 Home Slate Against Fairmont State and Frostburg State

West Liberty, W.Va. – With the regular season beginning to wind down with two weeks remaining in the regular season, the West Liberty University softball team will close out their home schedule at the Hilltopper Softball Complex this weekend as they host the top-2 teams in the MEC's North Division in Fairmont State and Frostburg State. The Hilltoppers will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, April 20, against the Falcons, and then will play their final two home games of the season on Sunday, April 21, against the Bobcats. Both days are slated for 1 and 3 p.m. first pitch times on the hilltop.

GAME DETAILS
  • Location: West Liberty, West Virginia (Hilltopper Softball Complex)
  • First Pitch: 1 and 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday
  • Senior Day (Saturday): 15 minutes prior to first pitch at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday against Fairmont State, the Hilltoppers will recognize three senior athletes, Avery Becker, Kieran Johnson, and Breena Grace.
WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters this weekend's doubleheaders with a 16-26 (10-12 MEC) record on the season after a mid-week split at Wheeling on Tuesday afternoon. The Cardinals took game one by a score of 5-4 in eight innings, while the Hilltoppers responded for a 7-1 win in game two.
  • The Hilltoppers are currently third place in the MEC North Division standings.
  • As a team, WLU is hitting .271 with 303 hits, 50 doubles, four triples, 15 homeruns, 136 RBI, and 162 runs scored through 42 games played this season.
  • Jaden Conrad leads the team with a .393 batting average while also posting a .461 on-base percentage, a .554 slugging percentage, and a 1.015 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 44 hits, six doubles, four homeruns, 24 RBI, and 25 runs scored. She has recorded a hit in 23 of the last 27 games she has competed in, and on Tuesday went 3-for-4 in both games against WU. On the base paths she is 6-of-7 on stolen base attempts.
  • Kayla Mancuso is second on the team in hitting percentage, batting .342, with an on-base percentage of .440, a slugging percentage of .395, and an on-base plus slugging percentage of .835. She has tallied 39 hits, three doubles, one homerun, 13 RBI, and 29 runs scored. Mancuso has notched a hit in nine consecutive games and in 25 of the last 29 contests she has appeared in. On the base paths she is 13-of-13 on stolen base attempts.
  • Sara Simon adds a .336 batting average while posting an on-base percentage of .374, a slugging percentage of .448, and an on-base plus slugging percentage of .822. She has tallied 39 hits, eight doubles, one triple, one homerun, 21 RBI, and 14 runs scored. At the plate she has recorded a hit in 13 of the last 17 games she has played in. On the base paths she is 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts.
  • Other players to bat above .300 during the 2024 season for WLU includes Sydney Johnson (.310) and Shelby Harris (.306).
  • The Hilltoppers' pitching staff has recorded an ERA of 4.89, allowing 321 hits and 109 walks, while throwing 149 strikeouts. Opponents hold a .280 batting average against WLU pitchers.
  • Kadence Pettit, the 2023 MaxPreps West Virginia Player of the Year has made 17 starts in 20 appearances to open her freshman campaign, pitching a team-high 99.1 innings and nine complete games thus far. She holds a team-low ERA of 3.71 to go along with a 1.42 WHIP, an opponent's batting average of .254, 67 strikeouts, and one shutout. With a record of 9-9 on the season she has struck out five or more batters in seven games.
  • Ashlyn Tapman is another key pitcher to watch for WLU, totaling 55.0 innings pitched in seven games started and 16 appearances in 2024 for a record of 3-5. She has recorded an ERA of 4.42, a WHIP of 1.36, and an opponent's batting average of .248. She has thrown a total of 40 strikeouts this season and has recorded six or more on three occasions, including a season-high of seven in a win over West Virginia Wesleyan.
  • Madison Angus holds an ERA of 5.55 while recording a WHIP of 1.63 and has held opponents to a .289 batting average. She has totaled 73.0 innings pitched to go along with four complete games in 15 starts and 20 appearances while she has recorded a 1-9 record. She has thrown 23 strikeouts on the year and has recorded a season-high of three on two occasions.
  • Sara Pelegreen is in her first season as the head coach at West Liberty with a record of 16-26 with the Hilltoppers. Overall, she is in her fifth season as a collegiate head softball coach and has compiled a career record of 85-156 which includes four prior seasons at Wheeling.
FAIRMONT STATE STORYLINES
  • Fairmont State enters this weekend's doubleheaders with a record of 32-10 (15-5 MEC) following a mid-week split at Frostburg State on Thursday as they won game one by a score of 5-2 before falling in game two, 3-2.
  • The Falcons are currently in first place in the MEC North Division standings.
  • Fairmont State is among three MEC schools under consideration in the first release of the NCAA's Atlantic Regional Rankings.
  • As a team, FSU is hitting .319 with 368 hits, 53 doubles, 11 triples, 23 homeruns, 233 RBI, and 265 runs scored through 42 games played this season.
  • Bella Hess leads the team with a .429 batting average while also adding a .484 on-base percentage, a .482 slugging percentage, and a .966 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 48 hits, two doubles, two triples, six RBI, and 37 runs scored. Hess has recorded a hit in four of the last six games she has appeared in. On the base paths she is 20-of-21 on stolen base attempts.
  • Emily Riggs holds a .382 batting average, a .562 on-base percentage, a .657 slugging percentage, and a 1.219 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 39 hits, seven doubles, seven homeruns, 40 RBI, and 36 runs scored.
  • Hannah Workman adds a .363 batting average, a .395 on-base percentage, a .407 slugging percentage, and a .802 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 41 hits, three doubles, one triple, six RBI, and 35 runs scored. On the base paths, Workman is 28-of-30 on stolen base attempts.
  • Alexa Andrews (.318) and Courtney Moyer (.303) round out the five players batting above .300 on the season for Fairmont State.
  • The Falcons' pitching staff has recorded an ERA of 2.96, allowing 278 hits and 114 walks, while throwing 168 strikeouts. Opponents have held a .251 batting average against FSU pitchers.
  • Delaney Haller leads all pitchers with a 1.25 ERA, 0.93 WHIP, and has limited opponents to a .210 batting average. In 123.1 innings pitched, she has thrown 15 complete games with five shutouts, a 16-2 record, and three saves. Haller has thrown a team-high 99 strikeouts.
  • Another pitcher to watch is Alyssa McCormick, who has pitched 60.2 innings in 16 appearances and nine starts. She holds a 3.92 ERA with a 1.47 WHIP, and has held opponents to a .267 batting average, while striking out 27 batters. McCormick has recorded an 8-5 mark in the circle this year.
  • Brooke Lowry is in her second season as the head coach at Fairmont State with a career record of 65-33 during her time with the Falcons.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Since 2011 Fairmont State holds a 27-16 lead in the all-time series.
  • The Falcons earned a sweep in the team's doubleheader meeting earlier this season on March 30, in Fairmont, West Virginia, winning by scores of 1-0 (8 Inn.) and 5-4 as both games were decided in walk-off fashion.
FROSTBURG STATE STORYLINES
  • Frostburg State enters this weekend's doubleheaders with a 23-16 (14-6 MEC) record on the season following a mid-week split at home against Fairmont State on Thursday afternoon. They dropped the first game to the Falcons by a score of 5-2 before bouncing back for a 3-2 victory in game two.
  • The Bobcats are currently in second place in the MEC North Division standings.
  • Frostburg State is among three MEC schools under consideration in the first release of the NCAA's Atlantic Regional Rankings.
  • As a team, FSU is hitting .309 with 331 hits, 67 doubles, six triples, 27 homeruns, 181 RBI, and 206 runs scored through 39 games played this season.
  • Jamie Roberts leads the team with a .425 batting average while also adding a .463 on-base percentage, a .740 slugging percentage, and a 1.203 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 54 hits, ten doubles, ten homeruns, 44 RBI, and 20 runs scored. Roberts has recorded a hit in six consecutive games and nine of her last 11 games played.
  • Allyssa Albright adds a batting average of .357 while also tallying a .440 on-base percentage, a .643 slugging percentage, and a 1.083 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has notched 25 hits, 11 doubles, three homeruns, 18 RBI, and ten runs scored.
  • Gracie Nelson (.352), Cristina Sommerkamp (.319), and Arden Miller (.319) round out the five players hitting above .300 on the year for Frostburg State.
  • The Bobcats pitching staff has recorded an ERA of 5.09, allowing 311 hits and 63 walks, while throwing 137 strikeouts. Opponents have held a .291 batting average against FSU pitchers.
  • Sydney Theobal holds a 10-4 record in 15 starts and 17 appearances for Frostburg State in the circle, posting an ERA of 4.89, a WHIP of 1.36, and has held opponents to a .288 batting average. She has struck out 42 batters in 92.0 innings pitched, throwing six complete games and four shutouts.
  • Katie Chapple holds the team's lowest ERA at 4.81 with a WHIP of 1.72 and has held opponents to a .305 batting average. In eight starts and 18 appearances, she has thrown 43.0 innings in the circle and has recorded two complete games and one shutout, tallying a 3-4 record. Chapple has collected 25 strikeouts this season.
  • Bill Vasko is in his sixth season as the head coach at Frostburg State with a record of 130-103 during his time with the Bobcats. Overall, he is in his ninth season as a collegiate head coach and has posted a career record of 180-186, which includes three prior seasons at Wheeling (2009-11).

  • Since 2021, Frostburg State holds a 9-7 edge in the all-time series.
  • The Bobcats extended their win streak to six over the Hilltoppers with a doubleheader sweep earlier this season on March 29, as they won by scores of 6-2 and 11-10.
