Hilltoppers Clash with MEC North’s Top Teams

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University softball team will face another tough task as they go on the road to face a pair of the top teams in the MEC North Division standings, visiting Frostburg State and Fairmont State. It will be a battle for second place in the division to open the weekend as the Hilltoppers and Bobcats are slated for a 2 and 4 p.m. first pitch on Friday at Bobcat Field in Frostburg, Maryland, while WLU will then face the division leading Falcons on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Duvall-Rosier Field in Fairmont, West Virginia.

WEST LIBERTY STORYLINES
  • West Liberty enters this weekend's doubleheaders with a 10-16 (5-3 MEC) record on the season after being swept by No. 15 Charleston by scores of 4-2 and 1-0, as well as a split at West Virginia State as they lost game one, 5-1, before bouncing back to win game two, 8-1.
  • The Hilltoppers are currently tied for second place in the MEC North Division standings with Frostburg State.
  • As a team, WLU is hitting .286 with 189 hits, 31 doubles, two triples, ten homeruns, 85 RBI, and 99 runs scored through 26 games played this season.
  • Sydney Johnson leads the team with a .392 batting average while posting an on-base percentage of .422, a slugging percentage of .494, and an on-base plus slugging percentage of .916. She has tallied 31 hits, six doubles, one triple, eight RBI, and has scored 14 runs. Johnson has recorded a hit in 15 of her last 17 games played, which includes eight games with two or more hits.
  • Kayla Mancuso is second on the team with a batting average of .350, while also recording an on-base percentage of .451, a slugging percentage of .433, and an on-base plus slugging percentage of .884. She has tallied 21 hits, two doubles, one homerun, ten RBI, and 17 runs scored. Mancuso has notched a hit in 15 of the last 17 contests she has appeared in.
  • Jaden Conrad (.333), Sara Simon (.328) and Carlee Leidy (.309) are the three remaining players who are hitting better than .300 on the season.
  • Mallory Rosnick leads the team with three homeruns on the year.
  • The Hilltoppers' pitching staff has recorded an ERA of 4.79, allowing 213 hits and 67 walks, while throwing 90 strikeouts. Opponents hold a .301 batting average against WLU pitchers.
  • Kadence Pettit, the 2023 MaxPreps West Virginia Player of the Year has made 11 starts in 14 appearances to open her freshman campaign, pitching a team-high 59.1 innings and five complete games thus far. She holds a team-low ERA of 3.19 to go along with a 1.53 WHIP, an opponent's batting average of .275, and 49 strikeouts. With a record of 6-7 on the season she has struck out six or more batters in four games.
  • Madison Angus holds an ERA of 4.80 while recording a WHIP of 1.54 and has held opponents to a .281 batting average. She has thrown 15 strikeouts on the year.
  • Brooke Perri is the top relief pitcher with a 5.50 ERA in 14.0 innings pitched in eight appearances. She has notched a WHIP of 2.43 and an opponent's batting average of .361 while striking out four batters.
  • Sara Pelegreen is in her first season as the head coach at West Liberty with a record of 10-16 with the Hilltoppers. Overall, she is in her fifth season as a collegiate head softball coach and has compiled a career record of 79-146 which includes four prior seasons at Wheeling.
FROSTBURG STATE STORYLINES
  • Frostburg State enters Friday's doubleheader with a 12-11 (5-3 MEC) record on the season following a split with Notre Dame, losing game one 6-0 before winning game two by a score of 12-7, and sweeping Salem on the road with victories of 6-5 and 8-0 this past weekend.
  • The Bobcats are currently tied for second place in the MEC South Division standings with West Liberty.
  • As a team, FSU is hitting .317 with 211 hits, 45 doubles, six triples, 19 homeruns, 120 RBI, and 138 runs scored through 23 games played this season.
  • Jamie Roberts leads the team with a .439 batting average while also adding a .467 on-base percentage, an .829 slugging percentage, and a 1.296 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 36 hits, eight doubles, eight homeruns, 32 RBI, and 15 runs scored. Roberts has recorded a hit in 21 of the 23 games for the Bobcats this season.
  • Arden Miller adds a batting average of .385 while also tallying a .448 on-base percentage, a .635 slugging percentage, and a 1.083 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has notched 20 hits, four doubles, three homeruns, 16 RBI, and 17 runs scored. Miller has recorded a hit in nine of the last ten games she has appeared in.
  • Gracie Nelson (.373), Allyssa Albright (.357), Cristina Sommerkamp (.343), and Hanna Binek (.324) round out the six players hitting above .300 on the year for Frostburg State.
  • The Bobcats pitching staff has recorded an ERA of 4.68, allowing 190 hits and 41 walks, while throwing 90 strikeouts. Opponents have held a .297 batting average against FSU pitchers.
  • Roberts also leads all starting pitchers with a low ERA of 4.26 while adding a WHIP of 1.42 and has held opponents to a .288 batting average. In 65.2 innings pitched she has posted a 4-5 record with 45 strikeouts.
  • In 12 appearances and 10 games started, Sydney Theobald is another pitcher to watch as she has posted an ERA of 4.35, a WHIP of 1.46, and has held opponents to a .297 batting average. She has struck out 30 batters in 64.1 innings pitched.
  • Bill Vasko is in his sixth season as the head coach at Frostburg State with a record of 119-98 during his time with the Bobcats. Overall, he is in his ninth season as a collegiate head coach and has posted a career record of 169-181, which includes three prior seasons at Wheeling (2009-11).
SERIES HISTORY
  • Since 2021 the all-time series between West Liberty and Frostburg State is even at 7-7 on the softball diamond.
  • The Bobcats extended their win streak to four over the Hilltoppers with a doubleheader sweep on April 25, 2023, in Frostburg, Maryland, with scores of 6-3 and 12-3.
FAIRMONT STATE STORYLINES
  • Fairmont State enters this weekend's doubleheaders with a record of 22-6 (7-1 MEC) following a sweep at Salem on Saturday by scores of 6-5 and 9-0 (6 Inn.), and Notre Dame on Monday by scores of 11-6 and 6-0.
  • The Falcons are currently in first place in the MEC North Division standings.
  • As a team, FSU is hitting .335 with 265 hits, 36 doubles, ten triples, 19 homeruns, 184 RBI, and 203 runs scored through 28 games played this season.
  • Bella Hess leads the team with a .507 batting average while also adding a .554 on-base percentage, a .587 slugging percentage, and a 1.141 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 38 hits, two doubles, two triples, five RBI, and 31 runs scored. Hess has recorded a hit in six consecutive games.
  • Elizabeth Waszkiewicz adds a batting average of .378 while also tallying a .408 on-base percentage, a .622 slugging percentage, and a 1.030 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has notched 17 hits, four doubles, two triples, one homerun, ten RBI, and 11 runs scored.  
  • Rounding out a trio of Falcons who hold a 1.000 on-base plus slugging percentage or better is Emily Riggs, who holds a .360 batting average, a .514 on-base percentage, a .653 slugging percentage, and a 1.167 on-base plus slugging percentage. She has tallied 27 hits, four doubles, six homeruns, 31 RBI, and 25 runs scored. Riggs has recorded a hit in seven consecutive games and 13 of her last 14 games played.
  • The Falcons' pitching staff has recorded an ERA of 3.01, allowing 188 hits and 90 walks, while throwing 111 strikeouts. Opponents have held a .257 batting average against FSU pitchers.
  • Delaney Haller leads all pitchers with a 1.26 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and has limited opponents to a .229 batting average. In 77.2 innings pitched, she has thrown nine complete games with four shutouts, a 10-1 record, and one save. Haller has thrown a team-high 62 strikeouts.
  • Another pitcher to watch is Allyson Nordling, who has pitched 47.2 innings in 15 appearances and ten starts. She holds a 4.55 ERA with a 1.91 WHIP, and has held opponents to a .307 batting average, while striking out 19 batters. Nordling has recorded a 5-1 mark in the circle this year.
  • Brooke Lowry is in her second season as the head coach at Fairmont State with a career record of 55-29 during her time with the Falcons.
SERIES HISTORY
  • Since 2011 Fairmont State holds a 25-16 lead in the all-time series.
  • The Falcons earned a sweep in the most recent match-up between the teams on April 21, 2023, in Fairmont, West Virginia, winning by scores of 8-0 and 3-1.
