Hilltoppers Fall to No. 6 Bobcats

West Liberty, W.Va. – The West Liberty University acrobatics & tumbling team wrapped up one of the toughest stretches in the country as they faced their fifth consecutive ranked opponent, falling to No. 6 Frostburg State on Thursday evening by a score of 269.575-256.135. The Hilltoppers were unable to earn an event win inside the ASRC but posted eight scores of 9.0 or higher during the meet and a season-best mark in the compulsory acro heat.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The meet started with Frostburg State securing a 37.750-36.750 win in the compulsory event, which included them scoring a 10.000 in the pyramid heat. The Hilltoppers posted a trio of 9.0 or better scores with a 9.550 in the acro heat, 9.850 in the pyramid heat, 9.700 in the toss heat, and a 7.650 in the tumbling heat. With the highest event score in the pyramid was Avery Ray and Kayla Gandy as tops while Katelyn Emborsky and Abbey Swinderman were mids.
  • The Bobcats clinched their second event win with a 28.600-27.500 victory in the acro event. WLU notched a pair of 9.0 or better scores as they recorded a 9.100 in the 5-element heat, 8.850 in the 6-element heat, and 9.550 in the 7-element heat. Highlighting the event in the 7-element was Gandy as a top while Abbey Horvath, Chloe Palmer, and Swinderman were bases, and Peyton Fry was the counter.
  • FSU extended their overall lead to 95.900-90.850 at halftime after a 29.550-26.600 win in the pyramid event. West Liberty posted a pair of 9.0 or better scores with marks of 7.750 in the inversion heat, 9.700 in the synchronized heat, and 9.150 in the open heat. In the synchronized heat was Ray and Gandy as tops while Emborsky and Swinderman were mids for the highest heat score of the event.
  • Following the break Frostburg State posted a 27.900-25.600 win in the toss heat. The Hilltoppers notched scores of 8.300 in the 450 salto heat, 8.550 in the synchronized heat, and 8.750 in the open heat. Highlighting the event for WLU in the open toss was Ray as the top while Emborsky and Audrey Prater were bases, Savannah Turner-Davis was positioned in the front and Paige Lawrence was in the back of the formation.
  • The Bobcats recorded a 54.525-51.025 win in the tumbling event over the Hilltoppers. In the event WLU posted scores of 8.250 in the duo pass, 7.800 in the trio pass, 8.200 in the quad pass, 9.375 in the aerial pass, 8.875 in the 6-element pass, and 8.525 in the open pass. Highlighting the event was Gandy with a 9.375 in the aerial as she attempted a 10.000 start value difficulty for the first time in her career in the event.
  • FSU recorded their sixth event win of the night with a 91.250-88.660 win in the team event.

West Liberty concludes their regular season by hosting East Stroudsburg on Saturday, March 23, for senior day. The Hilltoppers and Warriors are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start time inside the ASRC.
