West Liberty, W.Va. - West Liberty University's women's basketball team is once again stepping up to support the community through the Keep Wheeling Warm initiative. Partnering with Paree Insurance Centers, Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration, and Walmart at The Highlands, the team is collecting coats, gloves, and other warm clothing items to help those in need during the winter months.
Donations will benefit the Youth Services System (YSS) Sophie Moses Free Store, located at YSS headquarters in East Wheeling. The store serves the community by providing essential items to those in need.
The team launched their collection efforts during their home game against Walsh on Nov. 16 and will continue with a significant event at The Highlands Walmart on Dec. 17. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., team members will assist from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in filling a Panhandle Cleaning & Restoration truck with donated items.
Head coach Kyle Cooper expressed pride in the initiative, stating:
"Our Keep Wheeling Warm Initiative is something that our program has truly loved being a part of as it's evolved and grown over the last eight years, with the continued impact on our community always being paramount in our vision. We're beyond grateful for our partnerships with YSS, Paree Insurance, Panhandle, and Walmart, and even more so grateful for the opportunity to give back to a community that we feel so blessed to be a part of and always feel the support of here on the Hilltop. Thank you to all that continue to get in the game with us on this initiative and help in the effort to Keep Wheeling Warm."
Donations can also be dropped off at Paree Insurance locations in Wheeling, Moundsville, and St. Clairsville through Monday.
Brad Forshey, West Liberty University's athletic director, praised the team's efforts, saying:
"Through their kindness and generosity, our women's basketball program has shown how unselfish acts can have a direct impact on the Valley. This event is more than just a day of giving—it's a testament to the strength and unity of our community. Thank you to our coaches, student-athletes, and everyone involved."
The Sophie Moses Free Store is open to the public. For those needing assistance or wishing to donate, call YSS at 304-233-9627 to schedule an appointment. Along with coats and gloves, donations of warm clothing, shoes, hygiene items, hand warmers, and scarves are also welcome.
The initiative highlights the power of sports teams and community partnerships in making a meaningful difference, exemplifying West Liberty's dedication to giving back.
