West Liberty, W.Va. – For the second consecutive year the West Liberty University athletics department turned in a runner-up finish in the Mountain East Conference Commissioner's Cup, matching the best finish in department history set a year ago. The Hilltoppers' 20 MEC sports compiled 134 points out of a possible 197 for an all-sports rating of 0.68020.
A total of three West Liberty programs brought home conference championships this season. Starting with wrestling, head coach Danny Irwin's squad claimed seven individual conference titles en route to their third consecutive conference championship in the friendly confines of the ASRC. Next, head coach Justin Simpson led the men's track & field team to their first MEC championship in program history, clinching the indoor conference title with three individual champions. Lastly, head coach Ben Howlett and the men's basketball program continued their dominance within the league by winning their sixth consecutive regular season title and second straight conference tournament championship.
Simpson's men's track and field team also finished second place in the MEC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, while the women's team recorded a pair of runner-up finishes at both the indoor and outdoor MEC Track & Field Championships. Women's tennis, led by head coach Heather Gallagher, turned in another top-3 finish within the regular season conference standings by finishing second place with a 5-1 record in league play.
The Commissioner's Cup standings are compiled utilizing an "all-sports rating." This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points available (average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution). A bonus point is given for winning the conference tournament (in applicable sports).
WLU was one of nine different schools to win a conference championship within the MEC's 23 sponsored sports this season.
