WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – A ball-hawking defensive back and multi-sport standout, Jay Duffy was a cornerstone of Coach Bob Roe's powerhouse West Liberty football teams of the mid-1960s and remains one of the most decorated defenders in Hilltopper history.
Duffy was a three-time First Team All-WVIAC selection — a rare feat in any era — and the only unanimous pick on the 1967 All-WVIAC team. He led the conference in interceptions for three straight seasons and graduated as the WVIAC's all-time leader with 21 career interceptions, holding nearly every defensive record in the West Liberty record book at the time.
A two-sport athlete, Duffy also excelled on the baseball diamond as one of the league's top defensive outfielders. A three-year letterman, his speed and awareness made him an invaluable part of the Hilltopper lineup and a leader on and off the field.
After earning his degree in Education from West Liberty in 1969, Duffy went on to complete a master's in Business from Robert Morris University. He began his career as a teacher and coach before transitioning to the corporate world, where he rose to become a respected leader in organizational training and development for Bayer, Inc. He also served on several corporate and educational boards and was the founder and first president of the Pittsburgh WLSC Alumni Association.
Now retired, Duffy remains a proud and active alumnus, staying connected to his alma mater and its athletics community.
