BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – It was déjà vu all over again for four members of the West Liberty University women's tennis team on Friday as they were named to the All-Mountain East Conference Team for the second consecutive year.
Two of the honorees from Coach Heather Gallagher's Hilltopper squad – Gemma Cliffe and Nathalia Valencia – are now three-time All-MEC selections while sophomore teammates Emma Arnal and Evelina Martirosyan were repeat selections.
Arnal and Martirosyan earned first-team All-MEC honors this season in the league-wide coaches' balloting while Cliffe and Valencia collected second-team honors.
A sophomore from Seysses-Saves, France, Arnal was a two-time MEC Player of the Week honoree while alternating with Martirosyan at No. 1 and No. 2 singles and doubles.
Martirosyan, a sophomore from Yerevan, Armenia, also claimed an MEC Player of the Week award off a strong season at No. 1 or No. 2 singles and doubles.
Cliffe, a junior from Auckland, New Zealand, was the first MEC Player of the Week selection and was a solid performer throughout the season at No. 2 and 3 singles and No. 3 doubles.
Valencia, a junior from Cochabamba, Bolivia, anchored the Hilltopper lineup with a series of strong matches at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles.
The four West Liberty veterans helped lead WLU to a No. 4 ranking in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region and a runner-up finish in the Mountain East Conference behind nationally-ranked Charleston.
The No. 16 Golden Eagles swept the major MEC honors on Friday with Prinkle Singh repeating as MEC Player of the Year, Alec Foote earning his second straight MEC Coach of the Year plaque and Sofiia Krasikova being named MEC Freshman of the Year.
Seeded No. 2 in the MEC Tournament, the Hilltoppers will take on West Virginia State in Saturday's noon semifinal at the Schoenbaum Park Courts.
