2/6/2023 11:35:00 AM

BEREA, Ohio - The West Liberty University wrestling team continued its roll this past weekend with a team title and six individual champions at the John Summa Invitational hosted by Baldwin Wallace University.

The Hilltoppers totaled 381.0 team points to win the 10-team event by 22 points over the hosts. Cole Laya (125), Khyvon Grace (141), Alec Cook (165), Chase Morgan (174), Ty McGeary (184), and Francesco Borsellino (285) all claimed gold in their respective weight classes.

"It was another excellent day of competition getting our entire team out there one more time. To have 31 Hilltoppers compete today is a testament to them and their toughness, as well as our training staff and my assistants," said Head Coach Danny Irwin. "Normally at the end of the year teams are packing it in, but this team is taking ground and we love it as a staff!"

Coming off claiming the MEC Tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler award last weekend, Laya continued his dominance going 4-0 in the 125-pound bracket. He started the day with a 15-0 tech fall, then posted back-to-back falls before earning a medical forfeit in the title match over teammate Alexander Crane.

Crane, a freshman, slammed down a pair of first period falls to begin his day and then moved into the title match with an 8-6 decision in the semifinals before medical forfeiting.

Grace extended his winning streak with a 4-0 day at 141. A strong start quickly put him in the semifinals off a tech fall and major decision. Grace capped the first place run off with a pair of decisions, 7-2 in the semifinals and 4-2 in the championship.

Cook rolled into the finals with a pair of pins and a 14-6 major decision, then claimed gold with a 4-2 decision.

Chase Morgan took down the No. 9 nationally ranked wrestler in DIII, Colby Morris, of Waynesburg, with a thrilling 3-2 decision. He earned his spot in the championship with an opening 17-4 major, then a pair of three-point wins in the quarter and semi finals. "Chase is just picking up steam every week," said Coach Irwin. "He really demonstrated poise in a big match versus a top-10 ranked opponent! I'm not surprised though, as Chase has always performed his best at the end of the year."

After the championship victory, Morgan said, "I am grateful for the opportunity to compete. It's coming to a close so I'm thankful for patience and God's guidance. My teammates fired me up all day! #ClimbTheHill"

McGeary kept his undefeated record on the season alive with a 4-0 weekend improving to 21-0 on the season. He won the 184 division with a 16-9 decision in the championship after three straight falls to start the tournament.

Borsellino recorded five wins on way to the top of the podium in the 285-pound bracket. He posted four straight falls to make it into the championship match, where he was medically forfeited the win. Borsellino made all of the pins in the second period or sooner including a 49 second fall in the semifinals.

Vincent Scollo earned a spot in the 133 title match, but came up short with a 6-1 decision going the other way to get the silver medal. He posted a pair of tech falls, one pin, and an 8-4 decision to get into the championship.

Brett Goff (165) and Chance Morgan (197) placed 3rd in their brackets posting 4-1 records. "Brett took it to some opponents and had his teammates fired up all day," said Coach Irwin.

Jalen King (149), Toby Abbott (157), Caden Kenworthy (174), and Drake Kendrex (197) all placed fourth. Chance Morgan topped Kendrex in a 4-3 decision Hilltopper vs. Hilltopper third-place battle.

"I was really proud of Greg Brusco getting out there one more time as well as Marshall Whipkey picking up some fun wins," said Coach Irwin.

Brusco (149) and Whipkey (184) earned all their wins in the form of first period falls, Brusco went 3-3 and Whipkey 4-2 in their respective brackets.

West Liberty will be on the road Friday night at Davis & Elkins for its last dual of the season.
