2/24/2023 5:00:00 PM

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University wrestling team, who is tied for third in the NWCA national rankings, will travel to Tiffin University Saturday to compete in the NCAA Super Region 3 Championships.

The Hilltoppers will have 10 wrestlers competing, five of which nationally ranked and all ranked in the top five in the region. West Liberty has won the super region team title each of the past two seasons and sent eight wrestlers to the national championships last year, four of which return (Cole Laya, Ty McGeary, Francesco Borsellino, and Chase Morgan).

Cole Laya starts things off at 125 with a 19-2 record on the season and is ranked No. 2 in both national polls and No. 1 in the region. Laya has won the super region three of the last four seasons and finished runner up in 2019-20. He is the defending back-to-back NCAA National Champion at 125 as well. Laya became the winningest wrestler in MEC history with his third straight MEC gold medal and was named the most outstanding wrestler at last month's Mountain East Conference Championships. He also won the John Summa Invitational in the last tournament outing in early February.

Vincent Scollo (133) is fresh off his second straight MEC title and is ranked fifth in both national polls along with holding down the top spot in the region. Scollo enters with a 21-5 overall record this season. He placed third in the NCAA Super Region Championships last season, this is his third straight season qualifying for Super Regionals.

Freshman Khyvon Grace will battle it out at 141 for the Hilltoppers. Grace owns an impressive 27-7 record in his first season and is ranked 14th nationally by Open Mat and second in the region. He won his first MEC title last month in convincing fashion behind a pair of bonus-point victories, then followed it up with a victory at the John Summa Invitational at the beginning of February.

Senior Jacob Simpson is the top-ranked wrestler in the region and 15th in the Open Mat national poll at 149. Simpson enters the event with a 21-6 overall record and claimed his first MEC Championship last month inside the ASRC.

Jamar Williams has a 15-1 record in his first season on the hilltop. He comes into super regionals ranked No. 4 nationally and first in the region. Williams won his second career MEC title this year and will be competing in his first super region 3 after battling in super region 1 the previous two seasons. He qualified for nationals with a third-place finish in 2020-21 and placed seventh a year ago as a member of the Alderson Broaddus Battlers.

Alec Cook wrestled his way to a second MEC title this season and holds a 20-9 overall record. He kept the momentum rolling into another first-place finish at the John Summa Invitational on February 4. Cook is ranked second in the region and will be competing in his second super region championships after finishing in the top six in 2020-21.

Chase Morgan is up a weight class to 174 after being a national qualifier the past two seasons at 165. Morgan comes in ranked No. 2 in the region with a 13-10 overall record. He was recently named the MEC Wrestler of the Week after winning the John Summa Invitational earlier this month. This will be his fourth straight super regional. Morgan placed third each of the past two years and sixth in 2019-20 at 165.

Ty McGeary moved up to No. 2 in the country in the recent national polls and is No. 1 in the region with a perfect 21-0 record this season. McGeary has won gold at the Findlay Open, MEC Championships, and John Summa Invitational this year. The MEC title was his first time back in action since mid-December and he took down a nationally-ranked opponent on his way to the top of the podium. McGeary is the defending NCAA Super Region 3 Champion at 184 and has a third place finish on his resume from 2020-21. Last season, McGeary went on to finish third at the NCAA National Championships.

Chance Morgan will compete at 197 after competing at 174 the previous five seasons. Morgan is ranked fifth in the region and owns a 26-14 overall record this season.

Francesco Borsellino rounds out the lineup ranked fifth in the national rankings and second in the region. Borsellino sports a 19-4 overall record on the season and claimed the top spot on the podium in the most recent tournament, the John Summa Invitational on February 4. He finished second in the MEC Championships dropping a decision to No. 3 ranked Jared Campbell, of Glenville State. This will be his fourth super regional of his career as he looks to defend last season's title and make the national tournament for the third straight season. Borsellino also has a second and sixth place finish at the super regional in 2020-21 and 2018-19, respectively.
