Bogunovich Triple-Double Propels Hilltoppers to Comeback Victory

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - Kirsten Bogunovich recorded a triple-double, including a career-high 28 kills, to lead the West Liberty University volleyball team to a five-set comeback victory over Frostburg State this evening on the road.

Bogunovich, a senior setter/right side hitter, filled the stat sheet in addition to the career-high kills, she had 25 assists, 17 digs, a pair of aces, and a block assist.

After dropping the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-16, the Hilltoppers would not be denied.

West Liberty (12-7, 2-2) got out to a 10-5 advantage in the third set and did not give up the lead on way to a 25-21 win extending the match. Bogunovich capped off the set with her 16th kill of the night and did not stop there, scoring the first three points of the fourth set for WLU.

Frostburg State (13-7, 1-3) grabbed early control of set four, getting up 10-5 and then pushed it up to a 17-12 advantage. Seven of the next eight points were scored by West Liberty to retake the lead, Bogunovich had three kills during the run. The Bobcats narrowly took the lead at 22-20, but four straight Hilltopper points put the momentum back with the Black and Gold as they took the set 25-23.

It was the first fifth set of the season for either team and it turned out to be a doozy. No team led by more than three points in the back-and-forth battle that needed more than the allotted 15 points to decide a winner. West Liberty set up match point at 14-12 but was denied three straight times giving Frostburg State the opportunity for match point at 15-14. Riley Cudnik made a kill and Bogunovich served an ace to set up another match point for WLU. This time the Hilltoppers ended it on Cudnik's 10th block of the night.

The Black and Gold defense kept Frostburg State to below a .100 hitting percentage in each of the final three sets helping turn the tide. Nyia Setla's 32 digs paced the backline, which had four players with double-digit digs. Cudnik's 10 blocks were a career-high for the sophomore. Seven of the 10 were credited as solos.

Laura Gamel and Bogunovich teamed up for 57 of the team's 63 assists.

West Liberty will make the short trip to Wheeling on Tuesday night for its next match. First serve is scheduled for 7 pm.
