ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - West Liberty's libero,
Nyia Setla etched her name in the record books with her 1,000th career dig in the Hilltoppers first win of the season this evening, a sweep of Wilmington (Del.) at the Eckerd College Invitational.
After 23 digs this afternoon, Setla followed it up with a match-high 17 to eclipse the 1,000 career mark. In her third season as the Black and Gold's libero, she sits at 1,009 career digs.
West Liberty fell behind 3-0 to start the match, but rattled off a 7-1 scoring run to take the lead. The Hilltoppers never trailed again in the opening set. They closed it out with six straight points that featured three
Leah Driscoll kills.
The Black and Gold took control of set two when they broke an 11-11 tie with a 10-2 scoring spree.
Nina Billotto assisted on two blocks and then made the set-clinching kill to put the Hilltoppers up 2-0.
Trailing 21-16 in the third set, West Liberty would not let up. They roared back with eight straight points to take back control of the set, 24-21. Billotto had three kills during the rally. Wilmington fought off one set point before the Hilltoppers secured their first victory of the season.
Billotto served four aces to lead the squad which totaled 10 in the match. Driscoll paced a balanced attack with 11 kills,
Riley Cudnik had 9, and
Ruby Countryman added 8.
Haley Zeck dished out a match-high 27 assists and dug up 13 Wildcat attacks.
West Liberty will be back on the court next weekend at the Cedarville Invite. They open play in Cedarville, Ohio on Friday at 11:45 am against Saginaw Valley State.
