CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The West Liberty University volleyball team battled out a four-set victory over Saginaw Valley State to kickoff their weekend at the Cedarville Invite this afternoon.
The Hilltoppers won the first, third, and fourth sets by identical scores of 25-23 to improve their season record to 2-3.
Nina Billotto and
Kirsten Bogunovich racked up double-digit kills to lead the Black and Gold on the attack. Billotto tallied 13 on 28 attempts, while Bogunovich totaled 10 on a team-high 39 attacks.
Haley Zeck was the main setter for the 'Toppers attack, dishing out 29 assists.
Nyia Setla led the defense for West Liberty with 31 digs.
Katelynn Fritz added 22 digs on the back line.
Ruby Countryman and
Liv McAtee paced the Hilltoppers front line, which charted eight blocks in the match, with four block assists each.
West Liberty got off to a strong start scoring the opening five points of the match. SVSU rallied back to eventually take a 22-20 lead late. The Hilltoppers would not be denied and scored the next three points off kills from Countryman and Billotto along with a block by
Kaija Sydlowski to take back the lead. Billotto and McAtee rose up and stuffed a Cardinal attack for set point to win the opener, 25-23.
After Saginaw Valley State evened the match in the second set, the score was all tied at 23 apiece in the third. A Countryman kill and a Cardinal attack error gave West Liberty control of the match with a set lead heading to the fourth.
It was another back-and-forth battle in the fourth frame. Just like the third set it was 23-23 all late. This time a Bogunovich kill set the Hilltoppers up for match point and they won it off a Cardinal attacking error.
West Liberty will be back on the court tonight at 7:00 pm when they take on the host school, Cedarville.
