2022 Golden Eagle Invitational Results
The West Liberty University track and field teams are back home following a record-setting weekend at multiple venues.
The women's track team placed second and the men finished third in the Golden Eagle Invitational hosted by the University of Charleston. In addition to the strong showing in the capital city, a handful of Hilltoppers competed in the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by NCAA Division I Bucknell and returned home with a pair of school records.
   In Charleston, Coach
Justin Simpson's women were hot on the host Golden Eagles' heels throughout the meet. Charleston won the meet with 180 points while the Hilltoppers were all alone in second place at 146. West Virginia Wesleyan was third at 123 with Concord and Frostburg State tying for fourth place, well up the track with just 52 points.
On the men's side, the host Golden Eagles established themselves as the clear favorites for next month's MEC Championships with a winning total of 228 points. West Virginia Wesleyan held off WLU and Concord for second place with 84 points. The Hilltoppers were third with 80.5 points, just ahead of Concord. Rio Grande (Ohio) rounded out the top five with 69 points.
The women set four school records in Charleston on Saturday and
Kelsi Hulit notched an NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark in the discus to drive the runner-up finish.
Hulit, a returning All-Region thrower, swept the shot and discus everns and took runner-up honors in the hammer. Her discus throw of 156-10 (47.80m) is tops in the MEC this spring by 30 feet and exceeded the NCAA provisional standard by nearly two meters.
  Â
Hailey Carreon continued her outstanding spring with two more school-record performances. She won the 100 hurdles in 14.47 seconds - fastest in the MEC this spring - and also set a new school standard in the 200 meter sprint with a time of 25.72 seconds.
  Â
Abbe Stackpole was West Liberty's other record-setter, flashing across the finish line in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.54 seconds.
   On the men's side,
Mikhi Anderson lowered his own record in the 110 hurdles with a winning time of 14.86 seconds, which ranks third in the MEC this spring.
Also hitting the winners' circle for the Hilltopper men's team were
Liam Vinskovich, who cleared 6 feet, 4.75 inches (1.95m) to win the high jump, and
Adam O'Donnell with a long jump of 22 feet, 10 inches (6.96m).
Vinskovich's high jump puts him third in the MEC this spring while O'Donnell's long jump ranks No. 2 in the conference this season.
In Lewisburg, Pa., junior distance ace
Hannah Kemp continued to whittle away at her own school record in the 10,000-meter run.
Circling the oval at historic Christy Mathewson Memorial Stadium, Kemp knocked more than a dozen seconds off her previous school record with a time of 37:05.77. That's the second-fastest run in the MEC this spring and third overall in the Atlantic Region.
Not to be outdone, the members of the 4x800 relay team –
Danah Phillips,
Holden Ammons,
Tavian Richardson and
Michael Harriman – came in second in a loaded field with a school-record time of 7:55.97. That took nearly 15 seconds off the previous mark set just three seasons ago.
The West Liberty men and women head to Morgantown this weekend for their final tune-up before next month's MEC Championships. The Mountaineer Showcase is hosted by West Virginia University.
