WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University football team will close out their spring practice sessions on Thursday night with the annual Black and Gold Game at West Family Stadium.
   Coach
Roger Waialae's players will hit the field shortly before 7 p.m. for warm-ups with action in the Offense vs. Defense controlled scrimmage expected to start at approximately 7:10 p.m. All the action will be live streamed on the MEC Digital Network and TopperStation (link provided above).
   Hilltopper Sports Information Director
Don Clegg and former WLU assistant coach
Brad Forshey will be on the call with Coach Waialae joining them in the broadcast booth for additional commentary during the livestream.
The format for the Thursday night scrimmage is unchanged from recent years. Along with special teams work, the bulk of the action will be offense vs. defense. A modified scoring system will be employed but the coaching staff is far more interested in the matchups than the scoreboard.
"We improved as a football team this spring," Waialae said. "We put a big emphasis on playing faster mentally in order to eliminate the lapses that can be so costly and the guys really responded. I saw far fewer mental mistakes – wrong (pass) routes, blown coverages, missed blocking assignments – because we were processing faster, which allowed us to play faster.
"Our quarterbacks were making quicker decisions, kicks were getting off faster on special teams. It was a significant improvement all around and definitely something we'll be expecting to see Thursday night."
The Hilltoppers kick off the 2022 season on the road Sept. 1 with a road game at Clarion (Pa.). Kickoff for the Thursday night lid-lifter is set for 6 p.m. West Liberty will release its full 2022 football slate later this month.
