PHILIPPI, W.Va. – West Liberty University's No. 11-ranked acrobatics & tumbling squad won all six events here Thursday night in sweeping a Mountain East Conference tri-meet at Rex Pyles Arena on the campus of Alderson Broaddus University.
Coach Kelsey Kyle's Hilltoppers (3-0) amassed 245.035 points to easily outdistance Davis & Elkins (227.250) and the host Battlers (135.325) in their second outing of the young season.
West Liberty improved its team score by nearly 10 points over its total from last week's season opening win against West Virginia Wesleyan and the Black and Gold went to work in a hurry. A convincing win in the Compulsory event, highlighted by a 9.45 score in the pyramid heat gave WLU the early lead and the Hilltoppers never looked back.
A 9.55 in the 6-element heat keyed another win in the Acro event and West Liberty coasted into halftime with nearly a 10-point lead over Davis and Elkins after scoring a 9.45 in the third and final open heat of the Pyramid event to close out the first half.
The Hilltoppers kept right on rolling following intermission, opening the Toss event by tying a school record with an 8.95 score in the opening 450 Salto heat. Despite some minor bobbles, West Liberty also prevailed in the Tumbling event before closing out the night with an 85.71 score in Team.
The WLU acrobatics and tumbling team will be back in the friendly confines of the ASRC on Tuesday for another MEC match against Glenville State. Compulsories start at 6 p.m.
