WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - West Liberty University women's basketball coach
Kyle Cooper has announced the signing of Sophie Abraham, a 5'9" wing from Wheeling Park High School in Wheeling, W.Va.
A four-year member of the Wheeling Park girls basketball team, Abraham has helped lead the Patriots to a pair of West Virginia State tournaments and OVAC runner-ups.
"With the addition of Sophie to our 2023 recruiting class, we continue to build depth with regards to our wing room as we add another long, athletic, high motor player to our roster and it's a definite perk to get that kind of addition locally here from the Valley," said Coach Cooper.
Abraham was named second team All-Valley last season averaging nine points. "Sophie has owned her role throughout her high school years and we're excited to see her continue to make strides this senior season," said Coach Cooper. "There is no doubt in our mind as a coaching staff that her best basketball is ahead of her; and we cannot wait to help her grow, develop, and work towards meeting that potential."
A multi sport standout at Wheeling Park, Abraham also competed on the track and field team earning first team All-OVAC honors after winning the 100m high hurdle last spring along with back-to-back shuttle hurdle relay championships.
Abraham also has excelled in the classroom during her prep career. A member of the National Honor Society, she earned the AP Scholar Award and is a two-time recipient of the Stifel Award. She was named the female recipient of the Wheeling Park High School Heisman Scholarship. Abraham serves as the secretary of the National Honor Society and is a member of the WV Rhododendron club.
"On the visit, we immediately connected with her and her family and we love that both her and her parents were excited to jump with both feet to become a part of our family here on the Hilltop and cannot wait to officially get Sophie here both on and off the court," expressed Coach Cooper.
Sophia is the daughter of Audrey and Seth Abraham.
