WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. - The West Liberty University volleyball swept visiting Glenville State in three sets this evening inside the Academic, Sports, and Recreation Center. The Hilltoppers won sets by 14, 10, and nine points in the dominating effort.
West Liberty (13-8, 3-3) put together a strong defensive performance, holding the Pioneers (13-9, 2-4) to a negative hitting percentage. The Hilltoppers completed 10 blocks, led by
Ruby Countryman with six total and three solo stuffs. On the back line,
Nyia Setla and
Bella Dart had 12 digs each to pace a balanced defense. Dart's 12 were a season-high for the freshman.
Strong starts helped propel WLU to victory. In the opening set, West Liberty scored the first five points, then followed it up with four straight to start the second set. Glenville won the first two rallies in the third set, but nine of the next 10 points went to the Black and Gold to jump ahead 9-3.
The Hilltoppers led for the entire match, except for the 2-0 start to set three. In set one, they rattled off seven straight points to gain a 14-point advantage (19-5), the largest of the night.
Riley Cudnik led a balanced attack for West Liberty with a match-high 10 kills. Countryman added eight and Sydlowski seven for the Hilltoppers, who had six players record kills.
West Liberty will turn right around and take on Concord tomorrow morning inside the ASRC. First serve is scheduled for 11 am.
