PHILIPPI, W.Va. - The West Liberty University volleyball team completed a season sweep of Alderson Broaddus with a 3-0 win on the road this evening.
The Hilltoppers came out firing and posted a .367 hitting percentage in the opening set on way to a 25-15 win.
After not trailing in the first set, the Battlers fought back and went up 6-0 to begin set two. West Liberty chipped away and took its first lead of the set (10-9) with a 6-0 run. Alderson Broaddus was quick to answer with a 6-0 spurt of its own to get back in front, 16-11. The Hilltoppers won seven of the next nine rallies, but still couldn't put it away for good. The Battlers gave it one more run and went up 21-20, only to be outscored 5-1 to end the set 25-22 in favor of West Liberty.
The Black and Gold put the foot on the gas, getting up 8-1, early in the third frame and never looked back, earning a match-clinching 25-14 set win.
The Hilltopper servers totaled a season-high 13 aces in the convincing victory.
Kaija Sydlowski served a match-high four, while
Ashton Wronikowski had three.Â
West Liberty stymied the Battler attack throughout holding them to a .037 hitting percentage, including a negative percentage in the final set to put the match in the books.
Nina Billotto and
Ruby Countryman led the defense at the net each charting three solo blocks. Billotto finished the night with five total blocks and Countryman had four.
Seven players recorded kills for the Hilltoppers,
Kirsten Bogunovich paced the balanced attack with seven and only one error in 26 swings. Countryman and
Riley Cudnik added six apiece.
West Liberty returns to the ASRC on Friday for Senior Night against Frostburg State. The team will honor its seniors prior to first serve, which is scheduled for 7 pm.
