Revenge Win for WLU Highlights Final Day of Crossover

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University volleyball team opened the final day of the Atlantic Region Crossover event here Saturday morning with an impressive 3-0 revenge win against Bloomsburg (Pa.) inside the ASRC.
Coach Riley Schenk's host Hilltoppers (9-6) wound up splitting their two Saturday matches, dropping a 3-0 decision to Clarion, Pa. (8-4) in the final match of the tournament.
In the opener, West Liberty avenged last week's 3-set loss to the Huskies (5-6) in convincing fashion with a 25-21, 25-7, 25-22 sweep that was highlighted by an 11-0 run in the second set.
Kirsten Bogunovich led the way with a double-double of 40 assists and 11 digs to go along with 5 service aces. The 40 assists were a WLU season-high and rank No. 2 in the MEC for a 3-set match.
Riley Cudnik put away a match-high 10 kills while Katelynn Fritz also charted a double-double with 9 kills and 14 digs. MacKenzie Daub added 8 kills with Maddie Clayton contributing 7 kills and 4 blocks. Nina Billotto added 7 kills and 3 blocks as the Hilltoppers cruised.
Nyia Setla had a match-high 21 digs to pace five WLU players with double-figure digs. The Black and Gold's 81 digs were the second-highest total for an MEC team in a 3-set match this season.
In the late match, the Golden Eagles broke out of a 21-21 deadlock to take a 25-23 nod in the opening set and then rallied past the Black and Gold for another 25-23 decision in the second set, scoring the last two points after a 23-23 tie. Clarion finished off the win, 25-18, in the third set.
Cudnik had 8 kills and a pair of blocks for WLU while Fritz added 7 kills and 10 digs and Billotto hit .417 with 7 kills. Bogunovich had 24 assists and Setla contributed a team-high 11 digs in a losing cause.
West Liberty closes out its non-conference schedule on the road Tuesday with a 6 p.m. match at Tiffin (Ohio).
