CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team saw its season come to an end here Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to regionally-ranked Charleston in a Mountain East Conference Tournament semifinal at the Schoenbaum Courts.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's No. 3-seeded Hilltoppers fell into an early hole when the No. 2 seed Golden Eagles escaped with a hard-earned doubles point. The match was halted according to tournament rules once UC had clinched the decision with a trio of straight-set victories in singles action.
The two teams battled to the wire in the fight for the crucial doubles point. Charleston took the early advantage with a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles but West Liberty's
Nathalia Valencia and Jacqueline Pena Aceves wrapped up a convincing 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles just a few minutes later.
All eyes then turned to the No. 2 doubles match between WLU's
Luisa Agudelo and
Anita Ponti and UC's Katie Swann and AlexiAnn Drouin. The teams traded points throughout the evenly-matched affair before Charleston eked out a 7-5 win to take a 1-0 lead into singles action.
The Golden Eagles took straight-set wins at Nos. 3, 4, and 6 singles to conclude the match, advancing to Sunday's MEC Tournament championship match against West Virginia State.
