WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team couldn't get anything going here Saturday, dropping a 7-0 decision to West Virginia State in a battle of Mountain East Conference contenders at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers came up just short in the battle for the doubles point. The visiting Yellow Jackets breezed to a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles but
Gemma Cliffe and
Anita Ponti battled to the wire at No. 1 doubles before falling short by a 6-4 tally.
Nathalia Valencia and Jacqueline Pena Aceves lost in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles.
West Virginia State went on to clinch the match with straight set wins at Nos. 1, 3, 5 and 6 singles. Valencia and
Luisa Agudelo each posted opening-set wins for the hosts only to see their Yellow Jacket opponents bounce back to win the second set and go on to prevail in the tiebreaker.
The West Liberty women face another tough test on Wednesday when they hit the road for a non-conference match at regionally-ranked Indiana (Pa.).
