WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to Salem here Tuesday in a battle of regionally-ranked squads at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (6-3), ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic Region, fell into an early hole after losing the doubles point and couldn't fight their way back in singles play against the No. 7-ranked Tigers (9-3).
With only four available players, Salem had to surrender a forfeit at No. 3 doubles but breezed to 6-1 and 6-2 wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, respectively, to take the lead heading into singles.
West Liberty picked up forfeit wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles and
Luisa Agudelo came through with a straight-set victory at No. 4 but the visitors prevailed in straight sets at No. 2 singles and pulled out three-set verdicts at No. 1 and No. 3 to escape with the narrow decision.
The Lady Hilltoppers will try to bounce back against another regionally-ranked foe on Saturday when they host Mountain East Conference rival West Virginia State at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
