WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – West Liberty University junior men's tennis standout
Anton Schulz was a first-team selection on Thursday when the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced the 2019-20 NCAA Division II Academic All-District® At-Large Team.
The sprawling At-Large division includes student-athletes from the sports of women's beach volleyball, women's bowling, women's crew, women's field hockey, men's and women's fencing, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's water polo, men's volleyball and men's wrestling.
A native of Menden, Germany, Schulz was one of 10 first-team Academic All-District selections from District 2, which encompasses all student-athletes from the Mountain East Conference (MEC), the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) along with independents Salem (W.Va.) and Bluefield State.
An outstanding student who has maintained a 3.86 GPA as a Marketing major, Schulz has also been a key performer on the court for Coach Ron Hulewicz's Hilltoppers.
Schulz led West Liberty in singles and doubles wins a year ago while earning All-MEC honors. He won national honors as an ITA Scholar-Athlete and was a member of the MEC's All-Academic Team after posting a perfect 4.00 GPA over 19 academic hours during his spring competition season.
The returning lettermen was off to another strong start this spring, helping lead West Liberty to a Top 10 Atlantic Region ranking and being selected as the MEC Male Tennis Player of the Week in early March. The highlight of his season came in a road singles win against regionally-ranked Mohamed Belcora of perennial Atlantic Region champion Bluefield State shortly before the NCAA halted all spring sports competition.
As a first-team Academic All-District 2 selection, Schulz is now a candidate for the 2019-20 NCAA Division II Academic All-America® At-Large Team. Academic All-America® balloting gets under way next week.
