BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The West Liberty University men's and women's tennis programs made a clean sweep of the Mountain East Conference's Player of the Week honors when the league office revealed its selections on Tuesday afternoon.
Gemma Cliffe, a Lady Hilltopper freshman from Auckland, N.Z., was chosen as the MEC Women's Tennis Player of the Week while West Liberty junior
Anton Schulz, a native of Menden, Germany, was named MEC Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Cliffe played a key role for veteran head coach
Heather Gallagher in helping the Lady Hilltoppers remain unbeaten with a 7-0 blanking of California (Pa.) in non-conference action on Friday.
The impressive newcomer, already ranked among the Atlantic Region Top 20 in singles and Top 10 in doubles, lived up to those rankings with two convincing victories. She teamed up with returning All-MEC sophomore
Raissa Wagner for a dominating 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles before breezing to a 6-1 6-3 straight-set win against the Vulcans' No. 1 singles player.
It was a similar tale for Schulz on the men's side as the returning All-MEC standout helped first-year head coach Ron Hulewicz pick up his initial victory at the West Liberty helm with a 5-2 win against Shepherd Saturday night in Winchester, Va.
Schulz joined forces with true freshman
Zarion Jones to help the Hilltoppers clinch the doubles point with a 6-1 blowout at No. 3 doubles. The Hilltopper standout left no doubt in singles play, blitzing the Rams' Evan Dokken, 6-0 6-0, in their No. 2 singles match.
