WHEELING, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team continued its impressive start to the spring season here Friday afternoon with a 7-0 shutout of California (Pa.) University in a non-conference match at the Wheeling Park "Bubble."
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (3-0) made short work of the Vulcans (0-5). The Black and Gold lost just one game in picking up the doubles point with a three-match sweep and followed that up with six consecutive straight-set wins in singles play to finish off the shutout.
Gemma Cliffe coasted past California's Fallon Winseck, 6-1 6-3, at No. 1 singles and Nathalia Valencia posted a 6-2 6-1 verdict against Charlie Gallagher in their No. 2 singles matches.
The Hilltoppers' other four singles players -
Raissa Wagner,
Carleyah McLean,
Luisa Agudelo and
Katie Loader - didn't lose a single game in rolling to identical 6-0 6-0 sweeps.
In doubles play, Cliffe and Wagner combined for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The No. 2 doubles tandem of McLean and Agudelo breezed to a 6-0 win as did WLU's No. 3 pairing of Alex Olson and Valencia.
The West Liberty women won't hit the court again until March 5 when they stop off in Concord for an MEC match on their way to Myrtle Beach, S.C. for their annual competition week over spring break.
