Box Score 2 WESTFIELD, Ind. – The West Liberty University softball team wrapped up its weekend at the Midwest Regional Crossover with a pair of setbacks here Sunday at the Grand Park Complex.
Northwood (Mich.) powered its way to a 10-2 win in the first game and Coach
Herb Minch's Hilltoppers (2-3) saw a late-inning comeback fall short in a 5-3 loss to perennial power Southern Indiana (8-3) in the finale.
In the opener, the red-hot Timberwolves (5-1) continued their strong early-season play. Fresh off a win against No. 10 Indianapolis on Saturday, Northwood pounded out 11 hits and scored in every inning to overpower the Black and Gold.
Annie Paterson tripled home West Liberty's first run in the top of the fourth and scored the other run on a
Haley Collett single in the fifth but the Hilltoppers couldn't push any more runs across the plate and fell in five innings.
The Black and Gold jumped out to an early 1-0 lead against Southern Indiana on an RBI double off the bat of
Kat Donzella in the bottom of the first but the Greyhounds plated a pair of runs in each of the next two innings to put WLU on the comeback trail.
Southern Indiana carried a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth when the Hilltoppers got something going.
A leadoff double by
Allie Cook and a Donzella walk put runners on first and second with one out. Both runners moved up on an infield grounder and
Kate Meloun brought them home with a clutch two-out, two-run single.
That cut the lead to 5-3 but USI escaped with no further damage and West Liberty was unable to mount a threat in the seventh.
