BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Liberty University's
Chase Morgan received his first Mountain East Conference Wrestler of the Week Award on Tuesday.
The redshirt sophomore from Ripley, W.Va. earned his citation on the strength of a statement win during the No. 12 Hilltoppers' Top 25 showdown at No. 3-ranked Notre Dame (Ohio) on Friday night.
Morgan locked horns with Falcon senior Alonzo Turner, an NCAA Division II All-American currently ranked No. 8 nationally at 165 pounds, and handed him an 8-7 loss to give Coach
Danny Irwin's upset-minded visitors a 15-11 lead heading into the final four matches of the evening.
The Hilltoppers' rising 165-pounder shared this week's MEC Wrestler of the Week honors with UNC-Pembroke 197-pounder Nick Kee. An NCAA Division I transfer from Appalachian State, Kee went 4-0 with three bonus point wins and a first-period fall in Saturday's Kutztown Duals.
This is the Hilltoppers' fourth MEC Wrestler of the Week award of the season. Sophomore All-America 125-pounder
Cole Laya was the first honoree with freshman 184-pounder
Zane Lanham picking up two more awards.
The West Liberty wrestling team is idle this week as they prepare to host the inaugural MEC Championships on Feb. 1 at the ASRC.
