Hilltopper Baseball Celebrates Senior Day

Baseball | 5/7/2019 2:20:00 PM

| Box Score 2 | Box Score 3     WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team came up with a win on Senior Day here Sunday, rallying for a 5-2 victory against Wheeling Jesuit in a suspended game from Saturday night.
The Cardinals (12-34, 9-21) bounced back from loss to take both ends of the regularly-scheduled doubleheader from Coach Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (10-37, 9-23) by scores of 3-1 and 4-2.
Five West Liberty seniors - Parker Dyson, Coby Eckstein, Cody Shook, Mitch Viakley and Dalton Davis - were honored in Senior Day ceremonies at Kovalick Field on Sunday.
West Liberty trailed, 2-1, when rain halted play in the third inning of Saturday night's game but jumped on WJU quickly when play resumed following the Senior Day ceremonies.
Eckstein got things started in the top of the fourth with a one-out double to the wall in centerfield and Tyler Ramsay followed with an RBI triple to nearly the same spot before dashing home on a throwing error for a 3-2 Hilltopper lead.
Ramsay and Jason Schutte put the game out of reach with back-to-back home runs in the top of the sixth.
Viakley picked up the win with an impressive relief job, blanking the Cardinals on one hit over the final five innings while striking out five and not walking a batter.
Bailey McGrath added a double and two singles for the winners while Chad Matthus singled twice and scored a run as WLU pounded out 10 hits in the victory.
In the first game of the regularly-scheduled twinbill, the Cardinals spoiled Dyson's final start in a WLU uniform with a 3-run uprising in the top of the fifth and held on for the win.
Dyson had 11 strikeouts while allowing only five hits and issuing six walks in his 5-inning stint. Luke Nees closed out the game with two innings of scoreless relief.
Davis put West Liberty on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out RBI double. The senior catcher accounted for two of WLU's five hits in the game.
In the finale, the Hilltoppers battled back from a 4-0 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the sixth but left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh as the Cardinals escaped.
Schutte followed Ty Helmke's leadoff triple with a two-run blast over the right field wall for the Black and Gold's only runs in the sixth. Shook pitched into the seventh in his first career start.
