Box Score WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University baseball team fell behind early and couldn't climb all the way back here Wednesday as Walsh (Ohio) held on for an 11-2 win in a scheduled 9-inning non-conference game at Kovalick Field.
Already leading 1-0, the visiting Cavaliers (26-19) took control early with a six-run uprising in the top of the second.
Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (9-34) had their chances. West Liberty stranded six runners on base – four of them in scoring position – over the first four frames but were unable to dent the scoreboard.
That allowed Walsh to put the game out of reach with four more runs in the top of the fourth. West Liberty plated a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to avoid the shutout.
Brian Campbell and
Kaden Blomquist each doubled to lead WLU's 8-hit attack.
The Hilltoppers close out the season this weekend with a four-game series against Wheeling Jesuit. West Liberty travels to the Chambers I-470 Complex on Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before returning to Kovalick Field on Sunday to host the Cardinals in a 1 p.m. twinbill.
