Box Score 1 AVON, Ohio – The West Liberty University baseball team lost a pair of one-run decisions to Notre Dame (Ohio) here Saturday afternoon in Mountain East Conference action at Sprenger Stadium.
Coach
Eric Burkle's Hilltoppers (4-23, 3-11) came out on the short end of a 3-2 tally in the first game and the Falcons (12-17, 6-8) escaped with a 2-1 verdict in the finale.
In the first game,
Chad Matthus's RBI double put West Liberty up, 2-1, in the top of the fourth but a walk, bunt single, passed ball and wild pitch allowed Notre Dame to tie the score in the bottom of the inning without hitting the ball out of the infield.
The Falcons mounted their winning rally in the bottom of the sixth. With runners on second and third, the Hilltoppers cut down one runner at the plate but a two-out RBI single snapped the deadlock and gave Notre Dame the win.
West Liberty pounded out 10 hits in a losing cause.
Tyler Ramsay doubled twice and scored a run. Matthus had a single to go along with his run-scoring double and
Colton Coss added two singles and two stolen bases.
Eric Banal singled and drove in a run.
The Falcons came from behind to pull out the win in the second game, as well. Hilltopper starter
Sam Aulick carried a 1-hit shutout into the sixth but Notre Dame tied the game on a sacrifice fly and took the lead with a two-out RBI single that proved to be the game-winner.
West Liberty scored its only run in the top of the first when Coss laced a one-out single to left and
Coby Eckstein plugged the gap in left-center with an RBI double. Coss finished off a big day at the plate by going 3-for-3 with another stolen base.
Aulick was saddled with the hard-luck loss after holding Notre Dame to four singles while striking out four and walking three through 5 2/3 innings.
