WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team breezed to a 7-0 shutout win against a short-handed Concord squad here Friday in a rare indoor match on the WLU campus.
Friday's rainy conditions forced the teams to play their Mountain East Conference match on the Mondo surface courts inside the arena at the ASRC.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's host Hilltoppers (12-4, 5-0) weren't affected by the change, losing a total of just four games in the entire match to keep the Mountain Lions (0-6, 0-2) winless on the season.
With only four players making the trip for Concord, the visitors defaulted at No. 3 doubles.
Raissa Wagner and
Anita Ponti rolled to a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles while
Laura Huwe and Alex Olson posted a 6-1 win in the No. 2 slot.
Wagner, Ponti, Huwe and Olson all followed up with straight-set wins in singles to complete the sweep. Ponti posted back-to-back 6-0 6-0 wins at No. 2 singles while the three other Lady Hilltoppers dropped just one game each in winning their match.
The West Liberty women face a stiffer challenge on Saturday when they host West Chester (Pa.) in a non-conference match at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
