INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team closed out its Mountain East Conference schedule here Friday with a tough 5-2 loss at West Virginia State in a battle for a share of first place in the final MEC standings.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (14-8, 6-2) entered the match in a 3-way logjam with the Yellow Jackets (14-5, 5-1) and Charleston (20-4, 7-1) for the No. 1 seed in next week's MEC Tournament. The WLU women are the only conference team to beat UC this year but couldn't find the winning formula against State – the region's No. 1-ranked squad.
The Yellow Jackets took two of the three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.
Carleyah McLean and
Luisa Agudelo teamed up to give West Liberty a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles but the hosts prevailed in the other two doubles matches to grab an early 1-0 lead.
State was able to take care of business in singles play, running away to straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 5 and No. 6 doubles to take the match.
The visitors didn't go away without a fight. McLean scored a 6-3 6-2 win against Kayla McKnight at No. 4 singles while
Laura Huwe walked off with a 6-2 7-5 victory against Hanna Kruhlova at No. 3 singles.
The Lady Hilltoppers will be idle until MEC Tournament action gets under way Wednesday on the outdoor courts at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.
