WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to Salem University here Wednesday in a battle of regionally-ranked squads at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (14-7), ranked No. 9 in this week's NCAA Division II Atlantic Region ratings, lost the doubles point to the No. 4-ranked Tigers (18-2) and suffered a couple of tough three-set losses in singles play as the visitors pulled away to their 15th straight win.
Raissa Wagner and
Anita Ponti teamed up to give WLU a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles but Salem prevailed at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Luisa Agudelo pulled out a superbreaker win for the Hilltoppers at No. 5 singles but the Tigers clinched the match with straight-set nods at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Wagner and
Laura Huwe won the opening sets of their matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, only to see the visitors come from behind to pull out three-set wins and finish off the match.
The road doesn't get any easier for the Black and Gold as the Hilltoppers close out their regular-season slate on Friday with a 3 p.m. match at West Virginia State, ranked No. 1 in the region this week.
