WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team handed Charleston its first Mountain East Conference loss Saturday afternoon in a battle of regionally-ranked powers at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (13-6, 6-1), ranked No. 7 in the ITA's latest NCAA Division II Atlantic Region listing, took two of the three doubles matches from the No. 4-ranked Golden Eagles (15-4, 4-1) and split the singles matches for the impressive victory.
The Black and Gold accomplished the feat despite having to forfeit one of the singles matches due to injury.
West Liberty posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to gain the crucial doubles point.
Carleyah McLean and
Luisa Agudelo continued their strong run at No. 2 doubles with a 6-3 win while
Alexandra Olson and
Laura Huwe prevailed by a 6-4 count in the No. 3 slot.
Raissa Wagner delivered a big win at No. 1 singles, prevailing in straight sets with a hard-fought 7-5 6-4 decision against UC's Katie Swann.
McLean defeated Regina Saucedo, 6-3 6-4, at No. 4 singles and Agudelo came through with an identical 6-3 6-4 victory against Mathilde Simon at No. 5 singles to lock up the win.
The West Liberty women head to Elkins on Tuesday for a non-conference match against future MEC member Davis & Elkins. Doubles action gets under way at 3:30 p.m.
