WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team suffered its first Mountain East Conference loss of the season here Wednesday as West Virginia Wesleyan rallied to a 4-3 win at the Edgar Martin Tennis Complex.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (12-6, 5-1) got off to a strong start by winning the doubles point but could pick up only two more wins in singles play as the Bobcats (10-5, 5-1) came from behind for the win.
The West Liberty women picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to earn the doubles point.
Raissa Wagner and
Anita Ponti posted a 6-3 victory in the No. 1 slot while
Carleyah McLean and
Luisa Agudelo teamed up for an identical 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.
Agudelo sprinted off to a 6-0 6-0 win at No. 5 singles and Wagner handed Wesleyan's Sai Sakamoto a 6-0 6-4 loss at No. 1 singles to put the hosts one win away from victory but the Black and Gold couldn't get over the hump.
McLean bounced back from an opening set loss to the Bobcats' Julia Yanes at No. 4 singles to square the match with a tiebreaker win in the second set but Yanes prevailed in the third set to clinch the nod for the visitors.
The Lady Hilltoppers head to Charleston on Saturday for a crucial MEC showdown against the regionally-ranked Golden Eagles.
