HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team closed out its spring break trip in impressive fashion here Thursday afternoon, rolling to a 7-0 shutout of Clarion (Pa.) in the final match of the PTR Spring Tennis Fest.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (7-1) had no trouble taking the doubles point, losing only a total of three games in sweeping the three doubles matches. The Black and Gold followed that up with six straight wins in singles to close out the victory.
Raissa Wagner and
Anita Ponti scored a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles with
Carleyah McLean and
Luisa Agudelo teaming up to pitch a 6-0 shutout at No. 2 doubles. The WLU tandem of
Laura Huwe and Alex Olson took the No. 3 doubles by a 6-2 tally.
Ponti, Huwe, McLean, Agudelo and Olson all claimed straight-set wins in singles play. Wagner fought back after dropping a 6-2 decision in the opening set of her No. 1 singles match to square the match with a 6-3 win in the second set and take the tiebreaker by a 10-7 count.
The Lady Hilltoppers will return to the courts on March 17 when they travel to Erie, Pa. for a non-conference match with Mercyhurst.
