HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – The West Liberty University women's tennis team lost its first match of the season here Wednesday morning as a veteran Catawba (N.C.) squad rolled to a 7-0 victory in the PTR Spring Tennis Fest.
Coach
Heather Gallagher's Hilltoppers (6-1) struggled to get anything going in the doubles matches against the Indians (8-2).
Raissa Wagner and
Anita Ponti put up a good fight at No. 1 doubles, falling by just a 6-3 tally, but Catawba's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles pairings won 12 of the 13 combined games to claim the doubles point.
The West Liberty women weren't able to win a set in singles play as the Indians reeled off six straight-set sweeps.
Carleyah McLean and
Luisa Agudelo were quite competitive at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, falling by identical 6-3 6-3 scores.
The Lady Hilltoppers will try to finish off their Spring Break trip on a high note Thursday when they close out the Spring Tennis Fest with a noon match against Clarion (Pa.).
